How It's Made
Throwing
Wedge your clay to remove any air pocket, Set yourself up on a throwing wheel and centre the clay by coning up and down. Open it up and pull up the walls. Slice the bottom with wire and move it to a drying board. Cover it with plastic to slowly dry for a week for the next step!
Trimming
Set yourself up on a throwing wheel and tap-centre your leather hard pot. Use your trimming tool to smooth out the walls and the bottom. Stamp the bottom with the Maker’s Mark and do the rest of your decorating. Let it dry until your pot is bone-dry for the next step!
Bisque Firing
For Stoneware, your bone-dry work need to be fired in the kiln to 1800 degree F (cone 4). This removes all moisture and hardens your pieces, but it’s still porous enough for your next step!
Glaze Firing
Coat your Bisque-fired piece with either dipping glaze or brush on glaze. It goes into the kiln for the second time to be fired at 2200 degree F (cone 6). This vitrifies the final product and create glass-like finish. The final pottery is now waterproof, food-safe, microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe but not shatter-proof. The pottery now have the same property as glass.
